02 May Good Avocado – The Art of Going For It.
When I think of things that are seemingly impossible to do, two things come to mind. #1 Choosing a good avocado and #2 Choosing whether I should launch my own company.
The only thing I can do in both scenarios is go for it. But Jenifer you say, there’s a huge difference between those two things. If you choose a bad avocado, the most you’ll lose is a couple of bucks. If you choose a bad idea, the full consequences could be tragic AKA fatal.
What if I have a great idea, but poor execution? What if I run out of money? What if I target the wrong Customers? What if I know how to make it, but I don’t know how to sell it? What if everybody hates my idea and by default hates me? What if everything I have ever thought or said or done is wrong?!?!
Too far? Not really. For some, “What-ifs” can be unending. Risk and a fear of the unknown are the main reasons normally ambitious Women don’t launch their own company. A bad avocado will never be on the same level as an idea gone wrong, but an idea gone wrong doesn’t have to be the end of the world. If you launch it quick and fail fast, you can build upon the courage to try again. Practice makes perfect.
Poppycock, you say? It’s true. There’s a secret to not losing your shirt and your rep over a business idea. And the secret isn’t that all ideas are great. The secret is there are ways to test an idea before going ALL IN.
ASK YOURSELF SOME HARD QUESTIONS:
Step 1 –
Let’s start with the basics. What do you want to do? How do you want to do it? How are you unique? This is an important question because trust and believe somebody is doing something similar to what you’re doing. Are you improving something? Is it a product, a process or a service? For the improvement that you’re making, is this a problem of the masses or something you just-can’t-even…? Think beyond you and your friends. Look to data to support your claim. Have all that? Let’s move on.
Between us: “Problem of the masses” doesn’t have to mean you’re curing some extreme oversight. It could mean that you’re making something more convenient or easier to use, less expensive. Your design could be more streamlined, or more attractive. Perhaps your awesome sauce tastes better, is healthier or lasts longer? Lots of people would hop on that and tell their friends.
Step 2 –
Is this problem you’re fixing a headache level or migraine level problem? Do you need an Advil or an Excedrin PM? This is not a trick question. In fact, either answer is fine. The full potential of your idea will be different depending on how you answer though. Headache versus migraine can determine whether your share of this market is global or local.
Time to squeeze the avocado. How’d ya do on those questions?
Don’t worry if you didn’t have time to answer now or if you don’t know for sure what your answers mean. When you have a chance, take note of what you got and hit us up for your free consult.
